TIG, Argon, and V8: Behind the scenes of the Mustang GT exhaust production.

TIG: The No-Compromise Choice
We build the GTM system using the TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) method. While the world of mass production often relies on faster methods like MIG/MAG, for us, precision is everything. TIG is surgical-grade welding. It provides total control over the heat input, which is vital when working with thin-walled exhaust tubing to prevent overheating the metal and compromising its structural integrity.

What happens inside? The secret known as “Back-Purging”
What fans see on Instagram – uniform, shimmering “dime stacks” on the outside of the pipe – is only half the story. The true Restomotive quality is hidden inside. During the welding process, we utilize what is known as back-purging (argon root shielding).
We flood the interior of the pipe with shielding gas (Argon) to displace oxygen. Why is this so critical? Without it, as the steel melts, a porous, brittle structure resembling “cauliflower” (oxidation, professionally known as “sugaring”) would form on the inside. These imperfections don’t just weaken the weld; they disrupt the exhaust gas scavenging that we worked so hard to optimize during the CAD design phase. Thanks to back-purging, the interior of a GTM exhaust is just as smooth as its exterior.
Heat Management and Fighting Warpage
Welding involves the introduction of extreme energy. Our process includes:
-
Precision Jigging: The system is welded in specialized fixtures (jigs) built directly from the CAD model, which guarantees perfect repeatability and fitment.
-
Pulse Welding: We utilize advanced power sources that “pulse” the current, allowing for deep penetration while strictly limiting the Heat Affected Zone (HAZ) and preventing material overheating.

Colors That Tell the Truth
See those golden and purple hues on our welds? That’s not a photo filter. It’s proof of perfect gas coverage and the precise temperature control of the weld pool. A dull, grey weld would indicate overheated steel and a loss of its anti-corrosive properties. Gold is the “quality certificate” issued to us by the laws of physics.
Digitally Backed Craftsmanship
When you purchase a GTM exhaust system for your Mustang S550—or any other system from our shop—you aren’t just paying for “welded pipes.” You are paying for hundreds of hours of expertise, the purity of the shielding gas, and the peace of mind that every V-band joint will withstand the test of time and extreme temperatures.
