Precision Architecture, Part 4: The Restomotive Rear Vertical Link in Mustang S550

The Problem: The Weak Link in the Traction Chain
The OEM vertical link is typically a casting (steel or aluminum) fitted with soft rubber bushings. While meant for comfort, they are the primary culprit of Wheel Hop. Under heavy acceleration, the torque tries to “twist” the knuckle. The factory rubber deflects, allowing uncontrolled wheel movement. This creates a pogo effect that results in violent vibrations, lost time, and potential drivetrain damage.

Restomotive Engineering: A Compromise-Free Monolith
When designing the RST Custom Vertical Link, we opted out of adjustability to maximize structural integrity:
-
CNC Billet T651 Aluminum: We utilized aircraft-grade T651 aluminum alloy, machining the entire link body from a single solid block. No welds, no adjustment points—just one solid structure that won’t flex even under tons of load.
-
Full Spherical Technology (Uniball): We’ve completely replaced rubber with high-performance spherical bearings on both ends.
-
Direct Power Transfer: By using spherical bearings, suspension travel is restricted to its intended axis. Eliminating deflection ensures that power from the axles is delivered instantly to the tires.

The Result: No More Wheel Hop
The Restomotive Mustang S550 Vertical Link is the simplest yet most effective way to stiffen your rear IRS. It “locks” the assembly together, making the rear end feel tight and predictable. No more hopping, no more rubbery delays-just pure traction.
